ELSA for AI introductions

With its guidelines on ethical, legal and social aspects (ELSA), KARL provides a clear framework for the design of work and learning environments supported by artificial intelligence (AI) and helps to promote the integration of AI in an ethical and socially responsible manner. In addition to legal issues, the guidelines also focus on recommendations for integration into processes and organization. The guide serves as an orientation aid for social partners in companies and research institutions in order to create a future-oriented, people-centered working environment.

Target group

The guide is aimed at a broad target group, including research institutions, companies, employee representatives such as works councils and trade unions, and decision-makers who are planning to introduce AI into work environments. It offers recommendations for dealing with ELSA when introducing and developing AI. The recommendations are aimed at creating attractive and human-centered AI-supported working environments and taking into account the interests of those affected. By focusing on dialog, co-determination and a balanced use of AI, the aim is to promote a future-oriented and ethically reflective working environment.

Expected result

Companies and organizations receive recommendations for taking ELSA into account when implementing AI in work environments. This helps to create working environments that are tailored to the needs of employees and in harmony with innovation.
Employee representatives (works councils, trade unions) receive recommendations on how to exercise their co-determination rights and thus ensure a balanced consideration of ethical and social aspects when introducing AI in companies.
By incorporating ethical and social aspects, working environments are created for employees and workers that take their rights and interests into account and enable them to work in a transparent, responsible environment.
Overall, the guide provides a structured approach to utilizing the benefits of AI without ignoring ELSA. This contributes to the creation of a balanced, people-centered and future-oriented working environment.

General conditions

The exact application of the guide depends on the specific objectives and situation of the company, organization or research institution. The guideline is therefore structured in such a way that it provides an idealized phase model for assistance systems, for example, but the individual phases can also be processed in any order according to the current requirements. All relevant interest groups should be involved and work together cooperatively to ensure the successful application of the guidelines.
