Ethical, legal and social aspects of the design of AI solutions

Ethical, legal and social aspects (ELSA) form the social framework for the use of artificial intelligence (AI). An examination of ELSA is therefore an important step in the development of good technology solutions in general and AI systems in particular. Their systematic consideration is necessary in order to be able to create and introduce human-centered AI systems. However, the complexity of a comprehensive ELSA analysis is currently too high for many companies. In this workshop, you will learn how to prepare typical legal questions in the context of AI with reasonable effort in such a way that they are also comprehensible for legal laypersons.

Objective

By participating in this workshop, you will develop an understanding of the ethical, legal and social aspects of AI projects and will be able to incorporate ELSA into your AI projects. They have studied at least one aspect of ELSA in depth and developed a feel for the associated complexity. This sensitization enables you to approach AI projects with ELSA in mind.

Content of the workshop

In this workshop, you will learn about the specific challenges behind ELSA. Ethical, legal or social aspects must be taken into account as a basis for success before the start of the project and in all project phases when using AI responsibly in the company. This is why KARL will open up a concrete space for reflection in this workshop and design it with you. Implementation steps for your company or your area of responsibility will also be discussed during the workshop. At the beginning of the workshop, you will learn about the integration of ELSA in project process models by means of a visualized presentation, before deepening your knowledge of ELSA in up to three 120-minute modules that can be freely combined.

Module 1: Ethical issues
With this module, KARL opens up a guided and moderated reflection space for the exemplary identification of ethical issues and challenges of a project. In addition to the impulses from the group, the moderators typically introduce values that are particularly relevant in the context of AI projects into the reflection process.

Module 2: Legal issues
This module provides you with an overview of legal issues in the context of AI. The lecturers will provide exemplary insights into current developments as well as open questions in various relevant areas of law.

Module 3: Social issues
In this module, after a short keynote speech, you will experience the exemplary implementation of the moderated specification dialog method as a building block of social partnership-based technology design together with the moderator.

During the workshop, together with KARL, you will consider the consequences of what you have learned for your own area of responsibility and define appropriate measures. In this way, the format supports the transfer to their everyday work and area of responsibility. Four hours should be planned for independent follow-up of the content learned.
